Getting Ready to Move
Posted by: Ameris Bank August 9, 2021

Once the dust has settled from your recent home buying or selling experience, it’s time to face the feat of moving. A move is a significant life event, and while it can feel like a whirlwind process, don’t fret! There are many ways to avoid, or at least limit, the stress that comes with moving. The more planning and organization you do, the easier it will be to settle into your new home without risking your sanity in the process.

Approach your move with a plan.

The key to having a smooth move is to have a solid plan of action ready to go. Give yourself a realistic timeline to complete your move, and plan accordingly. Start with one room at a time and set daily goals to keep you on schedule. Creating a moving checklist will also help you stick to your plan and track your progress.

Don’t procrastinate!

This goes hand-in-hand with your moving plan. Many people tend to underestimate how long certain tasks will take. Tasks such as packing up a kitchen or cleaning out a closet may take longer than you think, so don’t wait until the last minute to start your process. No matter how daunting a move may seem, it’s better to tackle it head-on as soon as possible rather than scrambling to complete it in just a few days.

Declutter your home.

Moving is the prime time to declutter and get rid of any belongings you no longer use. You can start small by cleaning out that junk drawer, sorting through bathroom closets and cabinets, and clearing closets of any clothes that are no longer worn. If you haven’t used it or worn it in the last six months, chances are you don’t need to keep it. Check your local donation centers for pickup/drop-off options for gently-used items.

Hiring professionals? Do your research!

Professional movers will absolutely make your life easier; however, it’s important to do your research. Be sure to get quotes from a few different services and follow up by checking online reviews, referrals, the Better Business Bureau, etc. to ensure you are working with a reputable company.

Here are a few additional pro tips for working with professional movers:

  • Use reputable sites, such as Groupon, to find any discounts or promo codes for services

  • Movers typically charge per hour, so having your items packed and ready to go out the door will ensure a quicker and cheaper process.

  • Move as much as you can on your own, leaving just the larger items (furniture and appliances) for your movers.

  • If you have a flexible schedule, choose a less desired weekday to complete your move, which can also cut down on cost.

  • Try to move any electronics or highly valuable items yourself.

  • Keep an inventory of all items you move and take photos of large items in case any damage occurs.

Stay organized.

Nonchalantly tossing items in boxes will only make your move more difficult. Keep your belongings categorized and be sure to label your boxes with the room in which they belong. This will also help you prioritize what needs to be unpacked first when you arrive in your new home.

Take a breather.

No matter where you are in your moving process, take some time to step away and catch your breath. Taking breaks will help prevent you from becoming overwhelmed and will allow you to refocus. Also, don’t forget to sleep! Running on an empty tank during a move is never a good idea, so make sure you are at your best.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Although helping with a move might not be an ideal Saturday afternoon for your friends or family, sweeten the deal by offering to take them to dinner or provide snacks during the move. Everyone understands the stress of moving, so they will likely be more than happy to lend a helping hand. Just don’t forget to pay it forward!

Remember that life rarely goes according to plan, so don’t panic if you experience any issues or setbacks with your move. It’s only normal! The best you can do is be prepared and know that while your process may not go as smoothly as you hope, getting into your new home will be well worth it.
