Online Safety

From shopping and searching to schoolwork and more, you do just about everything online these days. But are you doing all of these things with security in mind? Review our online safety tips.

STAY SAFE WHILE BANKING ONLINE

We provide the high levels of digital banking security, but there are extra measures you should take to yourself safe.

Safety Steps

Even if you think your bank is sending you an email, it’s still best to proceed with caution.

  • Know the facts. Ameris Bank will not send unsolicited emails or text messages asking for account or other confidential information.

  • Don’t click. Even if you think you received an email that appears to be from Ameris Bank, it’s best to go directly to your online banking page and access your account, rather than clicking on the link in the email.

  • Visit our resources. Read more about spotting phishing emails.

Passwords are designed to protect our information, but we must also protect our passwords!

  • Do not share your account or login information with anyone. Ameris Bank will never call or send unsolicited emails or text messages asking for account or other confidential information. If you receive communication that appears to be from Ameris Bank asking for confidential information, such as a password, contact our Customer Service Center at 866-616-6020 immediately.

  • Use strong, complex passwords. Passwords should contain a mix of alpha/numeric characters and uppercase and lowercase letters. Avoid obvious passwords or PINs such as your zip code, birth date or social security number. Don't use the same password for every account. Watch our video to learn more about creating strong passwords.

  • Change your passwords frequently. By changing your password frequently, we recommend every 30 to 60 days, you can better protect your online accounts from hackers.

We can connect to wireless networks from relatively anywhere. While this is certainly convenient, it is not always safe.

  • Secure your home internet connection. Always protect your home wireless network with a password.

  • Avoid public, unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots. Set your phone so that it does not automatically connect to a wireless network. This will prevent you from accidentally exposing private/confidential information because you might assume you are on a secure network when in fact you are not.

  • Check your settings. Check for new updates on your phone, your laptop – even your web browser.
  • Turn on automatic updates. This will ensure you receive the latest security patches immediately
  • Look for the “s.” Verify that the web address you are using begins with "https."
  • Look for a padlock. Check to see if a tiny, locked padlock symbol appears next to the URL.
  • Don't save your payment information. Storing credit card information online can increase the risk that your card information will be stolen.
  • Check online reviews. Before making a purchase on a new shopping site, search the name of the company and read the reviews to make sure the retailer is a legitimate operation.
