Once the calendar flips to December, it’s impossible to avoid holiday movies on television and streaming services. As we watch this year, there are certainly some financial tips we can all glean from these films.

Jingle All the Way (1996)

The iconic mid-90s film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad follows two fathers who desperately try to find the hottest toy of the year, a Turbo-Man action figure, for their sons in time for Christmas. The lesson here? Plan ahead. This will help avoid unnecessary stress and overspending, especially as we experience supply chain and shipping delays.

Home Alone (1990)

Many remember Home Alone, the timeless movie featuring Kevin McCallister, a child accidentally left behind by his family as they travel to Paris for the holiday. Kevin famously had to fend for himself against a pair of dimwitted burglars.

The film reminds us that when we prepare to travel, it can be helpful at times to purchase travel insurance if we think our plans may change. Also, when leaving our homes for periods of time, check to ensure your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance is up to date and any home security device you use is activated.

Elf (2003)

Will Ferrell plays Buddy the Elf, who leaves his home in the North Pole to meet his family in New York City. Buddy lands a job redecorating a department store for the holidays, which is a reminder that many employers are often looking for seasonal help. This can be helpful as you look to fit all your loved ones into your holiday budget.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

In the classic A Charlie Brown Christmas, Charlie is criticized by his classmates for falling in love with a tiny Christmas tree.

This lesson reminds us that joy can be found in the eyes of the beholder and the dangers of “keeping up with the Joneses.” When it comes to trees, decorations or presents, stay on budget and remember, it’s not the size or the price tag that makes something special! Brown was happy with his Christmas tree, and that’s all that matters!
